There is frequent discussion among spiritual seekers about how to find inner peace and connection with your higher self. Always the answer seems to be the same, "quiet your mind, quiet your mind"! However when we think of our trifold system, Mind, Body and Soul, one can wonder, "what about the body, what about the body"?
The body functions because of the brain, serving as a type of control center for the different operations throughout the body. Therefore it stands to reason that if the brain is preoccupied with getting the body processes working smoothly, there are less resources available to work on higher contemplation, creativity, and connection to the divine. You can consider it with an example, when a person consumes too much food, we coincidentally have coined the term "food coma", which a person slips into. A person in a food coma would rather veg out, rest and digest and never consider solving complex problems or staying awake in an afternoon meeting. In fact your brain does steer you in the direction of a nap, as a way to shut down the alpha brain waves, freeing up the brains energy to focus on the body, which is handling the daily rations of food.
We can take this a step further and consider the type of food we are processing. Large quantities is one thing, but what about the body and minds ability to handle different types of foods? Processing whole foods and nutrients it's familiar with must be easier to handle, as opposed to the more foreign substances like processed foods. Our cells need to make a decision on the best way to handle each substance. It does seem to be a popular decision to handle the less familiar foods as energy to process later, hence the molecules are stored as fat.
As I sat under my oils earlier this month, in meditative posture, asking something along the lines of "what oils may help me move to my ideal weight easier". The vision of a bright green label popped up, and I wondered, "does lime help with weight loss"? It didn't make sense to me as I add a drop of lime to my sparkling water on a regular basis. I sensed the oil I was calling, or was it calling me, was on the left side of the shelves. I couldn't place it. As I finished my morning meditation I then got up and faced the shelves, letting intuition guide me towards the upper left side, there it was! The bright green bottle, Oola Balance! I had used the blend in the past but did not recall why or when. I did enjoy its sweet Ylang Ylang scent and moved towards my Young Living desk reference to see what it had to say about the blend. "Designed to align and balance your center...." "As mind and body are balanced, the ability to focus on passions, behaviors, and health are amplified for the better". This does make sense, in theory. As we balance out our bodies and our health gets better, any excess weight should balance out as well. I did like how the desk reference confirmed my thinking in that a quiet body (and mind) leads to focus on passions and other creative endeavors. I think we are about to hear more about this as intermittent fasting and the like becomes even more popular. Hopefully there becomes more research proving that fasting helps the mind, as well as the body, and hopefully just as much as we hear about quieting our minds today, there will soon be more talk around controlling the body and its importance in spiritual development.
